What does the union do?

The Union is your representation. We represent you when contract negotiations take place.  We negotiate the contract based on the guidelines that the members decide on in a democratic process at our monthly meetings prior to the negotiations.  

We represent you on a local and a national level in regards to  legislation.  We have members whose job is to stay abreast of impending legislation that affects our membership. It is their responsibility to see to it that legislation that is proposed or passed has a beneficial effect for us as members and our organization as a whole.

We also represent you in the event there is a conflict between you and your employer.  There are provisions in our contract that guarantees your rights, both statutory and contractual, are protected.

What does it cost?

Union membership doesn't cost, it pays!  If your elect to join there is an initiation fee.  There are also monthly dues that have to be paid and if you are working there is an additional assessment.

How do I find a job?

The local union maintains an "out of work list".  This list contains the names of members that are out of work.  When a contractor has a need for additional manpower he notifies the local union and places a "call".  This call is listed, in our case there is a recorder  you can call (573.635.5052) to find out what calls are available.  If you are interested in the job you call in and have your name placed on a list for that call.  If no one higher on the list calls for the job you go to work.

What qualifications do I need to join?

To apply for the Apprenticeship Program you need a high school diploma or GED and you need to pass an aptitude test.  The test requires a strong aptitude in math and algebra.  If you have been working in the trade, can verify 8,000 hours of electrical construction experience, and have passed a Block Journeyman or Master license test then we are very interested in talking to your about becoming a member.

Do I have to pay dues?

Just like any organization you belong to, the NRA, VFW, American Legion, Eagles, there are costs involved in running the organization.  This money can only come from the membership.  Yes dues are required.  There are monthly dues that go to support the International Organization.  When you work there is a .06% assessment,  this money goes to support your Local Union and the programs that the membership has chosen, by democratic process, to support.  As with any good organization the benefits of membership out weigh the cost of belonging.

What is the money from the dues used for?

The dues money you pay is distributed in many areas.    It pays the salaries of the Members that run our organization, overhead costs (i.e. rent, utilities, insurance, etc.), and for keeping up with our legislators in Washington, D.C..    The dues from your check go to defray the costs of running the Local Union.  We operate on the local level much the same as the International.

What if I want to work away from here?

One of the many benefits of the IBEW is that you can work in any part of the country you heart desires.  When you work in another Locals' jurisdiction you still have all your benefits in place.  Although every Local has different wage and benefit packages they all consist of the same basic components.  Insurance, pension, holiday/vacation, and unsurpassed working conditions.
